A Bit About Me

Bio

Ashlyn Morgan Capps is a Birmingham, Alabama based artist who primarily works with fiber materials to illustrate more abstract thoughts about her identity as a woman, artist, and human being.  Capps is currently working on her Masters in Education in Visual Arts at the University of Alabama at Birmingham while teaching art full-time at Empower Community School with kindergarten, first, second, sixth, and seventh grade in Bessemer, AL. In the fall of 2020,  She received her BFA in Art from the University of Montevallo with a concentration in sculpture and minor in art history.  Capps has participated in juried exhibitions across the region at places including the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, the Meridian Museum of Art, and Ground Floor Contemporary.

Statement

My work primarily expresses the struggle of forming an individual identity undeterred by familial relationships.  An identity constantly reforming in reaction against and because of familial attachments.  Evocative, bodily forms illustrate this attachment by conjoining, immersing, and twisting around one another.  This cyclical pattern of attaching then pulling apart alludes to the vacillating struggle of attaining the upper hand.  As a result of manipulating fiber material by stuffing, stitching, and twisting—the process also becomes the content.  This process becomes a meditative one that allows me to express inner turmoil by giving it a separate and physical place to exist.  As I mend or transform material, I am also healing and nurturing my own identity.  In this way, my work is continuously evolving as new relationships and experiences inform my life.
