Bodies

A Senior Exhibition by Ashlyn Morgan Capps

Vulcan Materials Gallery at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, AL.  April 14th-28th 2016

I am very interested in the way that things are held together in this world, what holds things together and why they fall apart.  I am in a constant state of being restrained by the environment that I feel the need to hold together.  This is something I wanted very obvious in my work: the heaviness and all-encompassing feeling of gravity working for and against you.  I am drawn to the idea of using materials in a way that contradicts their normal use.  Things that are typically understood as soft and feminine become defensive and aggressively protective.  I find strength in materials that are usually seen as delicate or fragile; in myself I have found strength through fragility and simultaneously through my process.
